#365DaysofTruth: Lessons in Faithfulness

"As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy."- James 5:11

This verse strikes me mainly because every time I have read the book of Job, I've never really understood why he is looked at as faithful, or as someone who persevered. I have mainly seen a whiny man who complained a lot, and in my eyes didn't trust God. He just wanted to die and avoid what was happening.

Annnnnd... I have always sided with the friends; never fully understanding why they are rebuked!

However, after reading through stories of different men in the Old Testament again, and seeing all of their imperfections and shortcomings, I'm starting to see that God's view of faithfulness is very different from my view of faithfulness. I fear that what I think as faithful is way harder and much more unattainable than what God expects.

I have always thought that in order to be faithful you must be able to accept whatever God throws your way with a smile. Without  complaining and without having any problem with what he is doing. I have also always believed that if suffering is occurring, there's a reason. I must have done something to deserve it. (Which is why I probably side with Job's friends)

With all that said, I have always felt like there is very few faithful bones in me. And often walk around feeling extremely guilty as I wrestle and cry through difficult times in my life. Through these hard times I talk to myself with words sounding much like the words Job's friends shared with him.

Granted, my sin is to blame for different situations. But other times, I have to believe after these readings, are  just times where God is humbling me or growing something in me. Not because of something I did (or did not do) but because he wants me to grow. Not because he's mad at me. Not because I have disappointed him. Just because he loves me and wants to help me grow. Or maybe just see what's in my heart.

After reading about Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and now Job, I see that Gods idea of faithfulness is very different from mine.

Abraham received a great promise from God and according  to scripture he believed God. Yet as you dig into Abraham's life you will see he made many mistakes. Throughout the time of waiting for God's promise to come true Abraham doubted and acted in fear. What I see in Abraham through the fear and doubt is that he would voice those fears and doubts to God.

It was a cycle. God would share the promise, and Abraham would talk to Him about how he felt about that promise. He would believe God. There were times where he would get tired of waiting, take matters into his own hands and mess up. But ultimately Abraham came back to God, listened to the promise once again, talked over his fears and doubts, and believed the promise.

And now here we see Job really wrestling through his deepest fears coming true. He wails, complains, wants to die, questions, fears, gets angry. Yet in the end is still called faithful.

I see through the life of these men, these heroes of the faith, that God doesn't expect for us to suck it up and smile through challenging times.

He doesn't want me to just take it all on my shoulders and bear it. He doesn't want me to make myself faithful- He wants me to share the suffering with him. He wants me to really share what I think and what I feel. Most importantly, he wants me to turn to him and be with him through the hard times. To not forsake him. To stick with him. To let him pick me up from the mud, allow him to clean me off and reassure me. He wants to be the one who saves me.

Challenge Accepted!

Good question!

A few weeks ago my sweet friend Nikki shared this website with me as we chatted over delicious fro-yo (yumm) & discipling time.  She was so psyched about this idea, and she totally inspired me to try it out!

But my curiosity went a bit deeper & I began to think about the idea of being happy.

The website states that 71% of people who attempt this challenge, fail! So this joy thing must be harder than it seems!

And it makes sense, right? I mean, come on, think about it... Being positive or happy doesn't come naturally in this world. And truthfully, this world has nothing of true value or pure  joy to offer. That, my friends, is something you can count on. As I thought about this, Jesus' words in John 6:33 resounded in my mind. He puts it simply:  In this world you will have trouble. Trouble and discouragement is something you can count on. But what about joy??

I went ahead and did a simple search on Bible Gateway (click to see the search results) and found that the word rejoice appears in the bible 154 times. (NIV version)  & joy appears 242 times. I'm sure some of those scriptures may over-lap, but... yikes! It seems like God has a lot to say about JOY... and something tells me its very important to him.

Here's a peek of what I found:

Joy (happiness) on the other hand... well those are things that you have to FIGHT for. We must fight for joy. Not just for the sake of being joyful ... but as I dug deep in the bible, I saw that being joyful is actually a command from God!

The 1st time it appears (according to Bible Gateway) is in Leviticus where God clearly and specifically commands his people to be joyful for a determined period of time.

Leviticus 23:40
On the first day you are to take branches from luxuriant trees—from palms, willows and other leafy trees—and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days.

As I looked deeper in the verses, I began to see God's heart. He wants to rejoice over me. (Isaiah 65:2) He delights in my joy. (Isaiah 65:19) He's happy when I'm happy. In fact, he will shower me with amazingness to bring me joy! (Jeremiah 32:41) But what he loves the most is when I rejoice in HIM. (Philippians 4:4) As Jesus said in John 6, this world cannot offer me joy. My circumstances cannot offer me true joy. Even the people that  love me back cannot complete my joy. I loved reading what Jesus had to say going a bit further in John 15: 9-12

9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

How will I  be able to successfully complete this challege? How will my joy be made complete? Simply by remaining in His love. By obeying his commands to the best of my abilities (and being open when I stumble).

And two of the commands that I have been focusing on for the last year tie right into it all...

Philippians 4:4-7
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus

AND

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will for you in Christ Jesus.

Needless to say, I am so looking forward to this challenge. Not just to be a part of a trend, but to really focus my mind and spirit on the amazing things that God does every single day! My hope is that through seeing those things, my heart can rejoice and praise Him 100 days and beyond!

She ReadsTruth: Fresh Start

A few days ago, I was fortunate enough to stumble across an AMAZING webpage. It may not be new to many, but to me its a brand new treasure! I began the Fresh Start Devotional @ She Reads Truth . This is how my journey began...

Just last weekend, I had been feeling really low & limping spiritually. I was feeling doubtful, scared, and guilt-filled. I felt the enemy whisper many lies, and the scary part was that I started to believe them. Things from the past began bombarding me as I laid down at night, and completely paralyzed me throughout the hours of the day. The silent guilt of the sin that I believed God cleansed me from long ago, began to haunt me again.

After many nights filled with doubt, growing fears and tears, my husband and I began a simple conversation on our way back from getting some last minute grocery shopping. After 20 minutes, the thoughts that I had been holding captive came pouring out. I expressed all of those things out loud... for the first time.

I am so fortunate to have such an amazing husband! After listening, hugging, and comforting me, he did what I needed so desperately... he told me that I needed to go to God and really lay all of those things at His feet. The reality was that I wasn't sure where to begin, or how to go about it. Especially since I felt completely unworthy to even approach His throne.

The first few days after the conversation with my husband I began praying and asking God for help. I needed his guidance... I needed him to lead me and I told him that I would follow and obey whatever he instructed me. Immediately after my prayer, I went online searching to get started on a devotional. When I found the She Reads Truth page for the Fresh Start devo, I was blown away!!! As I read the intro for day one, I felt God speaking to me... comforting me, challenging me, showing his love for me. Confirming what my hubby and my friends had been advising & challenging me on: "Mariana, you need to accept the grace that God has to offer!"

I am so excited to begin this great journey... the journey to a Fresh Start... I sure do need one! I feel like in the last 6 years of being a disciple, an understanding of Grace has not been something that I have been searching for. In my heart I see a prideful heart reflecting what Paul warned the church in Galatia:

"Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?"

 Galatians 3:3

I am excited to dive into God's grace! It feels like unknown territory, therefore a bit scary, but in my heart I KNOW that this is the path that God wants to take me to.

To God be the Glory,

XOXO
